cSPACE’s Spacepilot initiative is taking off, match-making underused commercial spaces with artists and non-profits looking for temporary digs in a Meanwhile Lease pilot program

If you have an organization or project that would benefit from a non-traditional lease lasting less than 2 years you may be a good candidate for a Meanwhile Lease. If you have a space that is underutilized, it may be the perfect fit for a Meanwhile Lease tenant.

What is a Meanwhile Lease?

Meanwhile leases are temporary leases typically granted to tenants such as local non-profit or charitable groups, which typically permits the use of a vacant business property temporarily for a non-commercial purpose. If you undertake a Meanwhile Lease, you do so with the understanding that the landlord is looking for a permanent tenant that will take a commercial lease of the premises. Meanwhile Leases typically have a short termination clause of 30 days, allowing either tenant or landlord the flexibility to end the Lease with short notice. Meanwhile Leases are common in the United Kingdom and have been used for arts and culture in Canada.

cSPACE is currently running a Meanwhile Lease pilot project called the SPACEPILOT YYC. This project provides one point of contact, connecting potential tenants with low-cost, low hassle space aimed at the arts and culture community.
